The MTCTCE is the course on traffic control: how packets flow through RouterOS, how to filter and mark them, and how to divide bandwidth among users and services using queues.
Who is the MTCTCE course for?
- Those who must guarantee bandwidth to services and clients
- WISPs and ISPs managing speed profiles
- Those who want to write a firewall with a clear understanding of the underlying mechanisms
What are the requirements for enrollment?
A valid MTCNA certification.
What is covered in the MTCTCE course?
- Packet flow diagram: how a packet traverses RouterOS between routing and bridging
- Firewall: filter, NAT, and mangle, connection tracking, chains, advanced actions and conditions, NAT helper, and UPnP
- QoS: HTB and queue tree, dual limits, priority, and burst
- Queue types (FIFO, SFQ, RED, PCQ), queue sizes, simple queues, and their interaction with the queue tree
- DNS client and cache, static entries
- DHCP client, server, and relay: options, pools, and advanced configurations
- Web proxy: rules, access lists, cache lists, and regular expressions
How is the course conducted?
The course usually lasts two days (three days in some editions), held in the classroom at the SICE academy in Capannori (Lucca) or online. There is extensive hands-on lab work on real routers: knowing the right command is not enough; you must understand why the packet takes that path. The official exam is always conducted in person: for classroom editions, it takes place at the end of the course; for online editions, it is held in a classroom on a date to be agreed upon with the organizers. Passing it earns you the MTCTCE certification, which is verifiable on the MikroTik website.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between MTCNA and MTCTCE regarding the firewall?
MTCNA introduces firewall and NAT; the MTCTCE course delves into packet flow, advanced connection tracking, mangle, and bandwidth control using queues.
Does the MTCTCE course cover PCQ?
Yes: PCQ, which divides bandwidth equally among many users, is one of the central topics of the MTCTCE course.
