The MTCNA is the course where you start. It gives you a complete overview of RouterOS and IP networks: by the end, you know how to configure a MikroTik router from scratch, connect it to the internet, serve a LAN, and protect it with a basic firewall.
Who is the MTCNA course for?
- those who install or manage MikroTik routers and want to do so methodically
- WISP, ISP, and system integrator technicians
- those who want to proceed with the Engineer courses, which require the MTCNA
What do you need to enroll?
No certification is required. You need basic knowledge of IP networks (addresses, masks, gateways): reviewing this before the course helps a lot.
What do you study in the MTCNA course?
- introduction to RouterOS and RouterBOARD: WinBox, WebFig, Quick Set, default configuration, and command line
- initial configuration for internet access, updating RouterOS and RouterBOOT firmware, backup, and reset
- DHCP server and client, lease management, and ARP
- bridge: concepts, ports, and wireless bridge
- static routing: default route and routes in a simple network
- wireless: 802.11 standards, frequencies, access point and station, security (WPA2), access list, and connect list
- firewall: connection tracking, filters to protect the router and clients, address list, NAT (masquerade, src-nat, dst-nat), and FastTrack
- QoS: simple queue, limits, burst, and PCQ
- tunnels: PPP, IP pool, PPPoE client and server, PPTP, and SSTP
- tools: netwatch, ping, traceroute, torch, graphs, SNMP, The Dude, logs, and supout.rif
How is the course conducted?
The course usually lasts two days (some editions three), in the classroom at the SICE academy in Capannori (Lucca) or online. There is a lot of lab work on real routers: the right command is not enough; you must understand why the packet takes that path. The official exam is always held in person: in classroom editions at the end of the course, in online editions in the classroom, on a date to be agreed upon with the organizers. Passing it earns you the MTCNA certification, verifiable on the MikroTik website.

Frequently asked questions
Is the MTCNA required for other MikroTik courses?
Yes: the MTCNA is the prerequisite for all Engineer courses (MTCRE, MTCWE, MTCTCE, MTCUME, MTCSE, MTCSWE, MTCIPv6E).
Do you need experience with MikroTik to take the MTCNA?
No, the course starts from the basics of RouterOS. It helps to already know IP addresses, masks, and gateways.
