The MTCSE is the security course: how to protect MikroTik routers, recognize and counter attacks, use encryption and certificates, and build secure tunnels.
Who is the MTCSE course for?
- those who manage routers exposed to the internet
- those who must protect corporate and client networks
- those who want to go beyond basic hardening
What are the requirements for enrollment?
A valid MTCNA certification.
What is covered in the MTCSE course?
- introduction: attacks, most common threats, and RouterOS security
- firewall: packet flow, stateful firewall, RAW table and SYN flood mitigation, bridge filters and ICMP
- management access: best practices and detection of attacks on critical services
- attacks at various levels: MNDP, DHCP (rogue server and starvation), SYN, UDP, ICMP smurf, brute force on FTP/Telnet/SSH, port scan
- encryption: symmetric and asymmetric algorithms, PKI, self-signed and free certificates in RouterOS
- securing the router: port knocking, secure connections (HTTPS, SSH, WinBox), service ports, SSH tunnel
- secure tunnels: IPsec, L2TP + IPsec, SSTP with certificates
How is the course conducted?
The course usually lasts two days (some editions three), in the classroom at the SICE academy in Capannori (Lucca) or online. There is a lot of hands-on lab work on real routers: the right command is not enough; you must understand why the packet takes that path. The official exam is always conducted in person: in classroom editions at the end of the course, in online editions in the classroom, on a date to be agreed upon with the organizers. Passing it earns you the MTCSE certification, verifiable on the MikroTik website.

Frequently asked questions
Is the MTCSE course useful for small networks too?
Yes: the techniques in the MTCSE course, starting from router hardening, are useful for any network with a MikroTik exposed to the internet.
What is the difference between basic hardening and the MTCSE?
Basic hardening secures a single router; the MTCSE course covers types of attacks and countermeasures, advanced firewall, encryption, and secure tunnels.
