The MTCSWE is the course on MikroTik switches: bridge and switching chips, VLANs done right, loop protection, and Layer 2 security.

Who is the MTCSWE course for?

  • Those who use CRS and CSS switches in enterprises, data centers, and operator networks
  • Those who design networks with many VLANs
  • Those who want to leverage the hardware offload of switches

What are the prerequisites for enrollment?

A valid MTCNA certification.

What is covered in the MTCSWE course?

  • Layer 2 forwarding: unicast/multicast/broadcast traffic, MAC learning, RouterOS bridge, switch chips, and CRS
  • MTU, L2MTU, and jumbo frames
  • VLANs: 802.1Q and 802.1ad, VLANs on bridge and switch chips, inter-VLAN routing, QinQ
  • Spanning tree: STP, RSTP, and MSTP, BPDU, and security
  • Link aggregation (bonding) and port isolation
  • Layer 2 QoS: 802.1p priorities and bandwidth limiting on bridge and switch chips
  • Layer 2 security: IGMP and DHCP snooping, loop protect, storm control, switch ACLs, BPDU guard, port security, 802.1X
  • PoE, diagnostic tools, and port mirroring
  • SwOS: installation, management, and configuration of Layer 2 features

How is the course conducted?

The course usually lasts two days (three in some editions), held in the classroom at the SICE academy in Capannori (Lucca) or online. There is extensive hands-on lab work on real routers: the right command is not enough; you must understand why the packet takes that path. The official exam is always conducted in person: in classroom editions at the end of the course, and in online editions in a classroom, on a date to be agreed upon with the organizers. Passing it earns you the MTCSWE certification, verifiable on the MikroTik website.

Frequently asked questions

Is the MTCSWE course only for CRS switches?

The MTCSWE course covers Layer 2 in RouterOS: it applies to CRS switches but also to the bridges in MikroTik routers.

Does the MTCSWE course explain VLANs?

Yes: VLANs, access and trunk ports, and bridge VLAN filtering are the core of the MTCSWE course.
