What did we cover in the lab?

We started with a room full of powered-on RouterBOARDS, green LEDs as far as the eye could see, and Ethernet cables crossing the tables like orderly spiderwebs. During these two days at SICE Telecomunicazioni, the focus was strictly on Layer 2 forwarding: how a packet enters a port, is forwarded or dropped, and what happens when you introduce bridges, VLANs, or link aggregation. It is not just about setting parameters, but about visualizing the flow of frames. We discussed how the switch chips in base models differ from the advanced ones in the CRS series, also touching on an overview of SwOS for those who want to manage L2 functions directly on the silicon.

Why is understanding MTU fundamental?

It is often thought that MTU is just a number in the interface settings, but it became clear in class how L2MTU influences the handling of jumbo frames and potential fragmentation issues. There was a moment when the discussion heated up on how the RouterOS bridge handles the maximum transfer unit at Layer 2, especially when physical ports with different capabilities are used side by side. It is not enough to enter the correct value; you need to understand what the packet actually does when it traverses a segment with different constraints. This is where the difference between knowing how to type a command and understanding the impact on traffic becomes evident: without this big-picture view, MTU issues remain mysterious and difficult to diagnose in a real network.

How does this path conclude?

The final exam was taken in class at the end of the course, closing the circle on what was covered in the labs. The added value lies not only in the certification, but in the ability to read the L2 topology as a living system, where every configuration decision has direct repercussions on the efficiency and security of the network.

When is the next edition of the MTCSWE course?

The upcoming dates have not been announced yet: if you are interested, leave a request in the MTCSWE course guide and I will let you know as soon as a date is available. The complete official program, module by module, is in the MTCSWE course guide.
